Once upon a time

in a galaxy not so far off

The popularity of the Star Wars series began with George Lucas understanding of our own religious entities.  The Darth Vader nemesis is reminiscent of Islam's Muhammed being throttled and choked into submission with the instructions to recite everything he heard into what we know as the Koran.  Another instance is the character General Akbar, notably mimicking the battle cries of the terrorism of Jihadis. The Jedi being knights are the most notable nod to the holy wars that have plagued our own galaxy here now and in the not quite so distant past.
